How to mix an epoxy seal coat
A seal coat is a small batch of epoxy that is brushed on in a thin layer to seal any pores on the substrate's surface and prevent air bubbles from forming in the flood coat afterward.
Our table top epoxy is intended for both seal coats and flood coats. Seal coats and flood coats are always a 50/50 mixture of resin and hardener components.
For the seal coat, you'll need a decent paintbrush. You can find one for around $10 at most home improvement stores.
Once you have what you need, do the following:
- Mix up a small batch (usually 16 oz. of resin and 16 oz. of hardener)
- Use the paintbrush to brush it onto the surface; you can apply the epoxy in the same way you might paint part of a wall.
- Wait four to six hours before continuing on to the flood coat stage.
Note: If you're doing an epoxy floor, wait a full 24 hours for the seal coat to cure enough to walk on.
Note: Any paintbrush should only be used once for applying epoxy seal coats. Although you can try cleaning it with acetone or denatured alcohol, there is no guarantee that it will work. Attempting to reuse the same brush later with bits of epoxy stuck to the bristles can cause problems.
