How To Seal Incompatible Finishes Before Applying Epoxy
Some stains, paints, and finishes may not be directly compatible with epoxy. If epoxy is applied over an incompatible finish, it may not bond properly or cure as expected.
One simple solution is to seal the surface first with oil-based polyurethane before applying UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy.
What Finishes Need to Be Sealed First?
Certain finishes should not have epoxy poured directly over them unless they are properly sealed first. This can include oil-based stains, oil-based paints, or other finishes that may interfere with epoxy adhesion.
If you are unsure whether your existing finish is compatible with epoxy, it is best to seal it before applying the epoxy.
Surfaces that may need to be sealed first include:
Oil-based stains
Oil-based paints
Surfaces with unknown coatings
Any finish that may prevent proper epoxy bonding
Using the correct sealer helps create a more reliable surface for the epoxy to bond to.
How Do I Seal an Incompatible Finish?
To seal an incompatible finish, apply 3 coats of oil-based polyurethane over the surface before applying UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy.
The oil-based polyurethane acts as a barrier between the incompatible finish and the epoxy. Once properly applied and prepared, the epoxy can be poured over the polyurethane instead of directly over the original finish.
Be sure to follow the polyurethane manufacturer’s instructions for application, dry time, and recoat time between coats.
How Do I Prepare Oil-Based Polyurethane for Epoxy?
Before applying epoxy over oil-based polyurethane, the polyurethane must be properly prepared.
We recommend lightly sanding the surface with 220-320 grit sandpaper. This removes the gloss and creates a better surface for the epoxy to bond to.
After sanding, clean the surface with acetone and make sure all sanding dust has been fully removed. The surface should be completely clean, dry, and free of dust before applying epoxy.
Can I Apply Epoxy Directly Over Oil-Based Polyurethane?
Yes, UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy can be applied over oil-based polyurethane, but only after the polyurethane has fully cured and been properly prepared.
The surface should be sanded with 220-320 grit sandpaper, cleaned with acetone, and allowed to completely dry before epoxy application. You still need to start with an epoxy seal coat first, before pouring the flood coat.
